The name AIDES is a double entendre, playing on the french word "aides" which means to help or assist, and the english word "aids." The organization was founded by Daniel Defert in 1984 shortly after the death of his partner Michel Foucault. Their goal is to bring people who are living with and vulnerable to HIV/AIDS together with their loved ones to defend the rights of people affected by this disease.
AIDES is now the largest non-governmental organization dealing with HIV issues in France.
